Thank
goodness winter is on its way out at last!
For our first ‘get-together in March, the Memory Cafe was ‘full of the
joys of Spring’ : books and puzzles about flowers and gardens were enhanced by
some beautiful floral artwork painted by two of our talented friends – one a
regular visitor to the cafe, the other an indispensable helper. Finally the tables were decorated with posies
of familiar herbs including parsley, mint, sage and rosemary.
In
the corner of the room was a striking floral display, and beside it was Sue,
the creator, our speaker for the afternoon, who had come to talk to us about
herbs and flowers. As usual, the cafe was packed, but you could hear a pin drop
as Sue gave us a brief insight into her many horticultural experiences before
demonstrating how to create a remarkably realistic carnation from a paper
serviette and some wire, along with some pinking shears and a degree of
patience. In fact we were amazed to
learn that the carnations in Sue’s beautiful floral arrangement were indeed
made of paper! Everyone was then provided with materials to ‘have a go’, and
the results were truly impressive. Finally, Sue showed us how a corsage could
be created by just adding a sprig of lavender and some ivy leaves.
Afternoon
tea was, as ever, delicious with a wonderful selection of home-made delicacies,
giving the chance for some more socialising and the opportunity to complete
puzzles or chuckle over some amusing flower based jokes.
For
the last part of the cafe Sue talked to us about common herbs and their uses –
medicinal, cosmetic and edible. She
brought many samples for us to see, taste and smell and together with our
herbal table displays it was a sensory delight!
To complete the afternoon we had the opportunity to take home a
parsley plant as a starter for our own herbal garden.
Altogether
it was a very busy and enjoyable afternoon and we look forward to another one
at our Memory Cafe Extra on Monday 20th March.
